Bariatric Surgery

is a procedure where the size of the stomach is curtailed using various techniques , as result of which one eats less and the body begins to use up stored fat for physical activity , resulting in quick and sustained weight loss.

Not only is this procedure helpful in losing weight but also helps in maintaining weight. Due to reduced food intake the chances of weight gain are negligible.

Bariatric Surgery is now " wide lt " endorsed by patients and as well as medical practitioners around the world. There are three most widely used to perform procedures that can be employed to lose or maintain weight.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A restrictive procedure where in the stomach capacity is reduced. to make the patient feel fuller even after a small intake of food.

This procedure is advisable for people with body mass index of 60 or more since the risk of intra and post surgical complications for them is very high.

In these cases ,sleeve gastrectomy is performed before a gastric bypass. This is done so that the patient will weigh a lot less at the time of bypass , reducing the risk of complications. It helps the patients reduce their weight considerably in 40% of the cases.

Whom is this procedure Meant For :
Such people if they change their eating habits they might not need the second surgery to complete the treatement. If it is necessary to resort to the second surgery such as bypass or gastric band, the patient will have to wait for 18 months. It might also be used as a first option of a restrictive procedure in patients of a BMI of between 45 and 60, if the medical assessment of the case determines so.

Sleeve Gastrotectomy: The procedure:
This is done via laparoscopic techniques which involves using special instruments that are introduced via small incisions that allow the area to be seen on a closed circuit television. These incisions are no more than 0.4 inches (1 cm) the surgical trauma and the blood loss is much less as compared to traditional surgeries. The surgeon reaches the stomach through these incisions and using a special stapler, a vertical suture is done to divide the stomach into two. One of the section is shaped like a tube that goes from the esophagus to the intestine. The other one is separated and removed.

Laparascopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

Laparascopic adjustable gastric banding is a reversible procedure for weight loss. This procedure involves the placement of silicone band around the upper part of the stomach that results in the creation of hour glass stomach with small outlet that allows food to enter the lower part of the stomach.

This band is effective in weight loss as it restricts the intake of food, moreover food stays in the stomach for long periods thus leading to decreased consumption of food and thereby not gaining extra weight.

Whom is this procedure used for :
Thus procedure is specially used for large eaters or those who have tried to loose weight several times unsuccessfully. Generally this procedure is recommended for younger patients as it is reversible. With this procedure one can loose about 40% to 50% of their excess weight within 18 months.

Laparoscopic Roux En Y Gastric Bypass

The Laparoscopic procedure is a small weight loss surgery that involves the creation of small stomach pouch with the help of staples that restricts food intake. In addition the initial segment of the small intestine is bypassed. As a result the food directly enters the jejunum. This leads to malabsorbtion of consumed food. The procedure also eliminates the hunger inducing hormone "Ghrelin". All these mechanisms contribute to significant weight loss.

What to expect after Surgery
It must be remembered that this surgery does not result in spot weight loss. In the first month 5-10kg can be lost and then 2-5 kgs can be lost depending upon your initial weight for the next 12-24 months. Studies have shown that "one can reduce" 50% to 80% of your excess weight.. excess weight is the : difference between an individual’s ideal weight and actual weight.

Post surgery your apetite will come down and you will be feeling full with small amounts of food. The first two years are critical as this is the time to follow medical and dietary advice perfectly to ensure weight loss is permanent. Monthly follow up is necessary for the first 3 months after surgery psot which your surgeon will advise you further.
